For the past five years, the South Haven Steelheaders have obtained 100,000 fish per year from the DNR and raised them in the Black River. These fish were then released from the pens in mid-May. The DNR has advised us from their studies that the survival rate from pen-raised fish is between 4:1 to 7:1, much higher than the average.
This year we found ourselves unable to rent pens, so the South Haven Chapter has undertaken a project to build our own pens. WIth the generosity of some local people, the cost has been reduced to approximately $1000.00 per pen. We would like to build THREE PENS and have them ready for the fish in early April.
Everyone that fishes near South Haven benefits from the fish that the Steelheaders raise and release. We would ask that you assist us in this project with a donation to the Net Pen Project. A donation of $25.00, $50.00 or $100.00, or any amount that you could budget would be appreciated.
