Tanner Award
MSSFA
wants to honor Dr Tanner for his many accomplishments which
continue to benefit Michigan’s sportsmen and sportswomen
today, by presenting an award in his name. This award is
presented to a non member of MSSFA who displays dedication and
leadership while making outstanding contributions to
Michigan’s anadronomus fish sport fishery.
It
is with a profound sense of admiration and gratitude that
MSSFA has the pleasure of announcing that Patty Birkholz has
been selected as the inaugural recipient of this prestigious
award.

| “Governor
Rick Snyder spent Monday enjoying a fishing trip on Lake
Michigan from the port of Grand Haven with Dennis Eade,
MSSFA, Erin McDonough, MUCC, Denny Grinold, MCBA as well as
his son and Senior Advisor Bill Rustem and former Fisheries
Chief, John Robertson. The Governor caught a nine pound
Steelhead and the crew went four for six with two lake trout
and a small Chinook in the box. The catch was prepared
afterwards at Old Boys Brew House in Grand Haven. The
Governor was able to see firsthand the effects of aquatic
invasive species as spiny water fleas clogged most of the
tackle throughout the day and the effect quagga mussels are
having on the food web was discussed.”

| MSSFA was organized in 1967 by a handful of
individuals who knew that Michigan's newly formed trout & salmon
fishery was something worth working to protect. They were a small
group who wanted not only to protect their fishery, but learn how to
catch their elusive prey and tell fishing stories.
MSSFA Chapters have membership meetings with guest
speakers to learn all the aspects of sport fishing. MSSFA Chapters also sponsor fishing clinics, seminars, sport-fishing
shows, derbies and tournaments.
With a
common goal, and a close working partner with the Michigan
Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). MSSFA helps to
enhance the resource and sport fishing in our rivers, streams,
inland lakes and of course the Great
Lakes.
